Nwabali in Mourning as Super Eagles Prepare for AFCON Round of 16 Clash

Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has been thrown into mourning following the death of his mother, dealing a personal blow to the national team camp ahead of Nigeria’s 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Round of 16 clash.

The tragedy occurred just two days before the Super Eagles are scheduled to face Mozambique’s Mambas in the knockout stage of the tournament, raising concerns about the emotional impact on the team’s first-choice goalkeeper.

The news emerged on Saturday through a Facebook post, which revealed that Nwabali’s mother passed away in the early hours of the day, around 2 a.m. The loss comes barely two months after the death of his father, compounding the grief faced by the shot-stopper.

As at the time of filing this report, the Nigeria Football Federation and the Super Eagles camp had yet to issue an official statement on the development.
