“If My Father Didn’t Marry Many Women, I Wouldn’t Exist” — Kunle Afolayan

Renowned Nollywood filmmaker Kunle Afolayan has stirred conversations online after openly advising men to marry many women, a statement he linked to his personal family history and upbringing.

Speaking at a movie watch party, the award-winning director reflected on his roots and the profound influence of his late father on his life and career. He said his background continues to shape his identity and achievements.

“I don’t chase shadows and I never forget where I come from, when I’m I look around today, I see my father everywhere. Without my father, there would be no KAP Village and there would be no Kunle Afolayan.”

The filmmaker revealed that he is the seventh child in a large family, noting that his father was involved with many women, though he is uncertain how many of them were officially married. While acknowledging that such a lifestyle often attracts criticism, Afolayan described it as his reality.

“My father had many wives ,or let me say many women. I don’t even know how many of them were properly married,” he said. “People may judge it, but that is my story.”

His comments drew mixed reactions when he advised men to follow a similar path, stating plainly that his existence is a result of his father’s choices.

“Men should marry many women, or at least be involved with many women,If my father didn’t live that life, I wouldn’t be here today.”Afolayan said

Despite the complexity of his family structure, Afolayan noted that some of his siblings are now actively working to preserve and promote their father’s legacy. He concluded with a reflective note on the importance of heritage.

“Life is short,” No matter how far you go, never forget your roots.”he said .
