Dangote Cement Marks International Day of Forests with Tree Planting, Seedling Distribution

As part of efforts to promote environmental sustainability, the Transport Unit of Dangote Cement Plc, Obajana, has carried out a large-scale tree-planting campaign alongside the distribution of seedlings to schools in celebration of the 2026 International Day of Forests.

In a statement released on Sunday, the company revealed that hundreds of trees were planted during the exercise, while 13 schools received seedlings as part of initiatives aimed at encouraging environmental responsibility among young people.

Speaking at the event, the Divisional Director, Transport, Col. Hemant Rana (retd.), represented by the Assistant Divisional Director, Abdullahi Aliyu, highlighted the importance of forests in maintaining ecological balance. He noted that forests are essential for climate regulation, biodiversity preservation, and the provision of vital resources for human survival.

He explained that the awareness programme and practical demonstration reflect the company’s dedication to educating stakeholders and taking meaningful steps to combat deforestation and environmental degradation. According to him, distributing seedlings to schools is a strategic move to instill a culture of environmental care in the younger generation.

“When we plant trees, we are investing in cleaner air, a healthier climate, and a sustainable future,” he said.

The 2026 International Day of Forests, themed “Forests and Economies,” underscores the role of forests in job creation, sustainable livelihoods, and economic stability. Dangote Group, one of Nigeria’s largest employers outside the government, reaffirmed its commitment to supporting such initiatives.

Also speaking, the Sustainability Lead of Dangote Cement Transport Nigeria, Olumide Balogun, described forests as critical life-support systems. He explained that they play a key role in regulating rainfall, improving air quality, preventing soil erosion, and providing habitats for numerous species.

Balogun called on stakeholders to ensure that the planted trees are nurtured to maturity, adding that the company remains committed to expanding its environmental efforts.

“We will continue to plant more trees, care for those already planted, and collaborate with host communities to ensure long-term impact,” he said.

In his remarks, the Human Resources and Administrative Manager at the Transport’s Post Trip Inspection Unit, Marcos-Akuso Daniel, noted that the event was not only a celebration of achievements but also a renewed pledge to deepen community involvement and strengthen corporate responsibility through sustained environmental actions.

The International Day of Forests is observed annually on March 21 to raise awareness about the importance of forests and trees. Established by the United Nations General Assembly in 2012, the day highlights the critical role forests play in providing food, medicine, clean water, and supporting the livelihoods of billions of people worldwide.
