FG Interventions Crash Food Prices by 50%, Kyari Says

Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Abubakar Kyari, says federal government policies have led to a significant drop in the prices of essential food commodities across the country.

Speaking at the 2026 Ministerial Stakeholders’ Retreat in Abuja, Kyari revealed food prices have fallen by as much as 50 per cent nationwide, a sharp contrast to previous years when the cost of staple foods surged.

“Government policies have helped crash the prices of essential food commodities by about 50 per cent across the country,” the minister said.

He noted that the improvement in the agricultural sector has also attracted significant investment into Nigeria’s agribusiness industry.

“This support has not only boosted agricultural productivity but also created jobs, increased incomes, and enhanced the overall competitiveness of Nigeria’s agribusiness sector, paving the way for a more prosperous and sustainable agricultural future,” Kyari stated.

According to the minister, the government has strengthened several agricultural value chains, including rice, maize, cassava, cocoa, yam and oil palm, helping farmers transition from subsistence agriculture to profitable agribusiness ventures.

Kyari also highlighted several interventions by the federal government aimed at improving productivity and rural livelihoods.

These include the distribution of more than 1.9 million bags of fertiliser, the construction of rural roads to improve access to markets, the provision of solar-powered boreholes, and the development of rural housing and market facilities.

He stressed the initiatives are designed to strengthen food security, drive economic growth, and improve living standards in rural communities across Nigeria.
