NYSC Warns Corps Members Against Night Travel Ahead of Orientation Exercise

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has issued a safety advisory to prospective corps members, urging them to travel only during the daytime as they prepare for the 2026 Batch A Stream II orientation exercise, citing rising security and accident risks associated with night journeys.

As preparations intensify for the exercise, the scheme specifically cautioned those posted to Osun State to avoid travelling at night.

The Osun State Coordinator of the scheme, Ita Kubiangha, gave the warning ahead of the April 22 commencement of the orientation programme, stressing the risks associated with night journeys.

“Night travel exposes corps members to risks, including accidents and security threats,” Kubiangha said in a statement issued in Osogbo through the scheme’s spokesperson, Catherine Otemuyiwa.

With thousands of young graduates expected to travel across the country, the NYSC advised participants to prioritise their safety by travelling during daylight hours and using recognised motor parks.

Kubiangha also called on transport unions to support the initiative by ensuring corps members are conveyed safely to the orientation camp at approved rates.

“We urge transport unions to assist in conveying corps members safely to the orientation camp, while adhering to approved transport fares,” he added.

The three-week orientation exercise is scheduled to run from April 22 to May 12, with the swearing-in ceremony fixed for April 24.

The NYSC further appealed to parents and guardians to play an active role in ensuring the safety of their children as they embark on the mandatory national service.

“Parents and guardians should support and encourage their children as they undertake this phase of national service,” Kubiangha said.

Reiterating its commitment to corps members’ welfare, the NYSC assured that necessary measures have been put in place in collaboration with relevant stakeholders to guarantee safety throughout the orientation period.
