Political Leaders, Citizens Unite in Massive Abuja Rally Against INEC

Thousands of Nigerians on Wednesday converged on the headquarters of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Abuja, braving steady rainfall to demand transparency and accountability in the country’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.

What began as a protest linked to a faction of the African Democratic Congress quickly evolved into a wider coalition movement. Citizens and political actors from different parties joined in, turning the demonstration into a unified call for electoral reforms and the protection of democratic values.

Among the prominent figures present were David Mark, Rauf Aregbesola, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Dino Melaye, alongside thousands of supporters.

“We are not here for politics as usual we are here to defend the future of our democracy, If the electoral process loses credibility, the entire system is at risk,” one opposition leader told the crowd.

Earlier in the day, protesters gathered at the residence of David Mark, where a church service was held in celebration of his 78th birthday before they marched toward the INEC headquarters.

Eyewitness Muyideen Bashiru described the momentum of the protest: “We’re currently heading towards the INEC office. You can see the crowd there are hundreds, possibly thousands of people gathered.”

He emphasized the cross-party nature of the demonstration, saying, “This is not just about one party. Nigerians from different backgrounds and political affiliations are here because the concerns affect everyone.”

Another participant added, “Even in the rain, people are standing their ground. That tells you how serious this issue is.”

Bashiru also noted the unexpected scale of the turnout. “This protest was initially planned for last week but didn’t happen. Today feels different it’s almost spontaneous, and the energy is overwhelming.”

Despite the downpour, the crowd remained orderly but visibly determined. “You can see the crowd behind me it’s still growing, and the energy is intense,” he said.

The protest underscores mounting public concern over the credibility of Nigeria’s electoral process as political activities begin to gather pace ahead of 2027.
