Social Media Suspended in Gabon as Authorities Warn of Destabilising Content

The government of Gabon has announced an indefinite suspension of social media platforms, citing concerns that online content is fueling division and threatening national stability.

The decision was announced on Tuesday by the High Authority for Communication, which said the move was aimed at curbing the spread of harmful and destabilising online content.

In a televised statement, the regulator said social media platforms had become channels for “inappropriate, defamatory, hateful and insulting content” that undermine human dignity, public morality, social cohesion and national stability.

Spokesman Jean-Claude Mendome revealed the decision followed repeated abuses on digital platforms.

“We are witnessing the uncontrolled spread of false information, cyberbullying, and the unauthorised sharing of personal data,” Mendome said.

He warned that such practices pose serious risks to the country’s social fabric and democratic institutions.

“These actions risk sparking social conflict, destabilising institutions, and undermining national unity and democratic progress,” he added.

While the statement did not specify which social media platforms would be affected or the duration of the suspension, the regulator stressed that the measure was not intended to suppress free speech.

“Freedom of expression, including the right to comment and criticise, remains a fundamental right in Gabon,” the authority stated, noting that such freedoms must be exercised responsibly and in accordance with the law.

Authorities said the suspension would remain in place until mechanisms are put in place to ensure responsible use of social media and the protection of public order.
