The US State Department issued a security advisory warning American citizens in Nigeria of a potential terrorist threat targeting US facilities and US-affiliated schools.
In a statement from the US Embassy in Abuja, citizens were urged to stay vigilant, avoid predictable routines, and review personal and family safety measures to reduce risk. The advisory did not specify the source of the threat.
The warning comes in the wake of recent military activity, including airstrikes ordered by former President Donald Trump on Christmas Day in Nigeria, targeting jihadist groups. The strikes were reportedly in response to concerns over the persecution of Christians, although analysts note that violence in the region affects both Christian and Muslim communities.
The advisory also coincides with heightened regional and global security tensions, including recent US and Israeli strikes on Iran and retaliatory missile and drone attacks by Tehran against US-aligned interests.
“Americans in Nigeria should exercise heightened caution and remain aware of their surroundings,” the embassy statement read, emphasizing vigilance amid both local and regional security threats.
The State Department urged citizens to monitor local media, follow guidance from local authorities, and report any suspicious activity to US embassy officials.
