Family of late Ghanaian footballer Dominic Frimpong have called for justice following his tragic death during an armed attack on his team’s bus on Sunday night.
The 20-year-old winger, who played for Berekum Chelsea, was among players and officials traveling when the bus came under heavy gunfire from suspected robbers. According to the club, the attackers opened fire as the driver attempted to reverse away from danger.
In the ensuing chaos, players and staff fled the vehicle to safety, but Frimpong was struck in the head. He was rushed to the hospital but later died from his injuries, making him the only reported casualty. Ghanaian authorities confirmed that about 30 players and officials were on board at the time of the attack.
At the family house, grief and disbelief filled the air as relatives struggled to come to terms with the loss. Amid tears, they insisted that justice must be served.
“We want justice. That is the only thing that can help ease our pain,” a family member said.
In a statement, the Ghana Football Association expressed deep sorrow over the incident.
“The Ghana Football Association (GFA) has received with profound shock and deep sorrow the tragic news of the passing of Dominic Frimpong of Berekum Chelsea Football Club,” the statement read.
“The incident has sent shockwaves across the entire football fraternity. The GFA extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, his teammates, technical staff, management, and all at Berekum Chelsea during this extremely difficult time.”
The GFA described Frimpong as a “promising young talent” whose dedication and passion embodied the spirit of the league. He had scored two goals in 13 appearances this season and had recently joined Berekum Chelsea on loan from Aduana FC.
Sunday’s attack is not an isolated case, as several clubs including FC Savannah, Wa All Stars, Legon Cities, and AshantiGold have reported similar incidents in recent years, raising growing concerns over the safety of football teams in Ghana.
Local police said they have deployed additional personnel and crime scene experts to the area, assuring that those responsible will be brought to justice.
As tributes continue to pour in, the tragic death of Frimpong has reignited calls for improved security for players and officials across the country’s football league.
