Tinubu Hails Pate, Makanju as Nigerians Make Devex Power 50 for 2026

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has congratulated Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Prof. Muhammed Ali Pate, and Anna Adeola Makanju, Vice President for Global Impact at OpenAI, following their inclusion on the Devex Power 50 List for 2026.

The prestigious list recognises 50 of the most influential individuals and institutions shaping the future of global development. Pate and Makanju were selected alongside global leaders, including Ghana’s President John Mahama, for their impact across health reform and emerging technologies.

In a statement released by the State House, President Tinubu described the recognition as a proud moment for Nigeria, noting that it reflects the country’s depth of talent at home and in the diaspora.

“By their nomination, Prof. Pate and Anna Makanju have made Nigeria proud. This honour is another testament to the immense talents and potential that abound in Nigeria and among Nigerians across the world,” the President said.

Prof. Pate, a former World Bank Global Director for Health, Nutrition and Population, was recognised for his strong advocacy for improved healthcare access in Nigeria and across Africa, particularly his push for local production of health commodities.

Devex also highlighted his role in driving reforms within the global health architecture, describing him as one of the most prominent health ministers on the continent.

Makanju, who oversees global policy, governance, and model deployment at OpenAI, was acknowledged for her growing influence in shaping how artificial intelligence intersects with global development.

A former Special Adviser to US President Joe Biden, she is leading OpenAI’s engagement with governments worldwide, contributing to early AI regulatory frameworks and advising leaders on balancing innovation with public safety.

President Tinubu urged both Nigerians to remain committed to excellence and to continue using their platforms to advance development globally.

The Devex Power 50 is an annual curated ranking that spotlights individuals, organisations, and initiatives redefining the development landscape worldwide.
